Artist: John That

Single: The Calmdown

Project: Radiosurfer

RadioSurfer started from a simple idea: to release a mixtape about the last year of John That's life. Quickly it grew into something much more: 21 tracks, 14 brand new original songs, all flowing flawlessly together and telling the story of a day in the life. Born out of his love for concept albums and the seamless psychedelic masterpieces of the 60’s and 70's, John wanted to create a cohesive experience in the era of MP3 singles and digital downloads. Recorded in basements, bedrooms, garages and a mix of pro studios, the project became increasingly complex as it developed. Teaming up with long time friend and collaborator, producer/engineer Zak Jordan, the songs slowly grew. Programmed drums were replaced with live performances when the popular SoCal reggae group Pacific Dub got involved. Once bare digital tracks were filled with life as friends and family began volunteering their talents - bass guitarists, lead guitarists, saxophonists, vocalists, rappers, producers, and percussionists came out of the woodwork once they heard about the album and got a taste of John’s vision. One of the most important features came from a Styrofoam head named 'Steve'. In his search to find new sounds and recording techniques, John uncovered the world of 'Binaural' audio - a forgotten recording technique that mimics the way humans hear sound creating eerily realistic 'I'm right there!' experiences when listening back through headphones. This technique was used throughout the album on all of the skits and on both of the live tracks 'Sunshine' and 'I Cannot Imagine' (a hidden track buried deep in the last skit 'Shortwave'). So what does RadioSurfer sound like? RadioSurfer encompasses the trials of a Generation Y, twenty-something, who abandoned the corporate world for the open road. There's love, lust, loss, sex, poverty, dreams, failures, parties and fun all served with a side of ocean breeze. John’s self proclaimed ‘Indie Pop Reggae Hip-Hop’ somehow just works. Whether it’s stripped down to acoustic guitar and vocals on the live track ‘Sunshine’ or pumping at you four-to-the-floor on the dance track ‘She Gimme That’, RadioSurfer is an experience worth experiencing. So set aside the next hour of your day, throw your sunglasses on, roll your windows down, and enjoy the ride that is John That’s RadioSurfer.
